    Test charging voltage at the battery

    Fully charge the battery, then measure across its terminals with the engine running — you should see roughly 13.5–14.5 volts. If it won't rise above about 12.7V while running, the charging system isn't keeping up; if the battery won't hold a charge overnight, the battery itself is done.
